Virginia Creeper National Recreational Trail

The Va Creeper Trail stretches 34 miles from Abingdon, Virginia down thru the lovely town of Damascus, Va (known as the Heart of the Va Creeper) along the Whitetop Laurel River and up to its highest point Whitetop Station near the NC State Line at Whitetop, Virginia. The Va Creeper Trail is open year round to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Carvers Gap (Appalachian Trail)

Explore the high mountain balds from this gap at Roan Mountain. Step onto the Appalachian National Scenic Trail from this site or continue a few short yards up the mountain and across the state line into North Carolina and the Rhododendron Gardens area.

Beauty Spot (Appalachian Trail)

Unaka Mountain Beauty Spot is known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Tennessee and North Carolina mountains. Located on the Appalachian Trail in Unicoi county, the trailhead to Beauty Spot is one of the most accessible lookouts in northeast Tennessee, just a 40-minute drive from Johnson City.

South Holston Lake

Spreading along the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains, the 7,850-acre lake is shared by Virginia and Tennessee and is easily accessible from towns throughout Southwest Virginia, including Abingdon and Bristol. Besides being among Virginia’s more sizeable reservoirs, South Holston Lake is also one of the most picturesque. Almost two-thirds of the lake is fringed by the Cherokee National Forest, providing boaters and paddlers a serene natural backdrop.

Blue Hole Falls

Blue Hole Falls is a 0.5-mile lightly trafficked loop trail near Elizabethton, TN that features a waterfall and swimming hole. It is good for all skill levels. To get there, take Highway 19E out of Elizabethton for about 10 miles, and turn left onto Panhandle Road at the brown national forest sign for “Blue Hole.”
